“The Power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18)
In the first chapter of the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Church in Corinth he says that Christ
sent him to them: “to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the
cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are
perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy
the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”” (1: 17-19)
Paul goes on to contrast the ‘way of the world’ with ‘the Way of The Cross”: “has not God made
foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God
through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who
believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a
stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and
Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser
than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” (1: 20c-25)
These words were the inspiration for one of the greatest Good Friday Three Hours addresses,
given in New York in 1951 by Anglican monk, Dom Gregory Dix. It was his last Good Friday on
earth and whether he knew that or not, God certainly did and spoke through him mightily that
day.
As we follow Jesus again this year in Lent along the Way of the Cross, together with our guest
speakers, in meditating on His Passion, Suffering and Death, may we discover afresh, “Christ –
the power of God and the wisdom of God”
Again this year our speakers will share their reflections during the Stations of the Cross service
and will join us afterwards downstairs for a simple, meatless, Lenten lunch. The services begin
at 11:30 am, at Holy Trinity Church, 298 Main St, Blackville (preceded by a ‘Holy Hour’ of silent
prayer before the Blessed Sacrament from 10 – 11 am, for those who wish to partake of this
extra act of devotion to Our Lord in Lent). We aim to be ‘on the road’ by 1:00 pm each week.
