Celebrating a River Steward: Ashley Hallihan to be Inducted to the Atlantic Salmon Museum Hall of Fame

The Atlantic Salmon Museum is proud to announce its 2025 Hall of Fame inductee: Ashley Hallihan.
Born on March 26, 1979, to Pat and Kathy Hallihan, Ashley grew up with fishing in his blood. He spent his childhood casting lines in the Hallihan Pool with his cousins, forming the early love for angling that would go on to shape much of his life. At a time when there weren’t many young “lads on the river,” Ashley stood out—determined to carry on the traditions of fly fishing and eager to share them with others.
A Teacher With a Passion for the Outdoors
After earning his Bachelor of Education from UNB in 2002, Ashley began teaching at Miramichi Valley High School. From the very beginning, he poured his heart into youth programs, coaching boys’ soccer and mentoring students both inside and outside the classroom.
In 2008, together with fellow teacher Tony Svarc and guides Willy Bosco and Jason Curtis, Ashley co-founded a fly-tying and fishing club at MVHS. For many students, it was their first introduction to the art of tying a fly and the thrill of landing salmon with it. The club grew into something much bigger than an after-school activity—it hosted exhibitions, welcomed fly tyers from across the region, and gave young people unforgettable experiences on the water. Ashley even organized canoeing and camping trips, adventures that sparked a lifelong connection to the outdoors for many.
Bringing River Learning to Blackville
In 2019, Ashley transferred to Blackville High School, where his course load included Outdoor Education 110, Outdoor Education 120, and Environmental Science 120. These courses tied perfectly to his passion for the river, allowing him to weave conservation, fishing, and respect for nature directly into his teaching.
With strong support from the school and community, Ashley helped create an Outdoor Teaching Classroom in the forest near BHS—a space where students and staff can learn surrounded by nature itself. It’s a project that reflects his belief that education should be hands-on, rooted in the environment we love and depend on.
A Family and Community Legacy
Ashley married Kelly Manderville in 2004, and together they’re raising three daughters—Malia, Lainey, and Janna. Often, you’ll find them by his side on the riverbanks, rods in hand, sharing the very same joys that Ashley discovered as a boy.
Beyond teaching and family, Ashley has become a respected voice in the angling community. He has volunteered countless hours with conservation groups, organized fishing events, and tirelessly advocated for practices like catch and release. His version of the famous Green Machine fly is sought after far and wide, a small but lasting symbol of his craftsmanship and influence.
A Well-Deserved Honor
The Miramichi River has benefited deeply from Ashley Hallihan’s commitment to education, conservation, and tradition. By inspiring young anglers and reminding us all of the importance of balance on the river, he’s leaving a legacy that will last for generations.
The Atlantic Salmon Museum is honored to welcome Ashley as a 2025 Hall of Fame inductee. Please join us in celebrating this achievement at the Induction Ceremony on October 18, 2025, in the River Room at the museum. Tickets will go on sale to the public starting September 12, 2025.
