Caution and preparedness urged ahead of storm
FREDERICTON (GNB) – The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (NBEMO) is urging New Brunswick residents to be prepared and stay informed as hurricane Dorian is expected to impact the province Saturday.
The latest forecast is for severe winds and rainfall which could have a major impact on southeastern New Brunswick beginning Saturday afternoon. Sustained winds of 90 km/h and 100 mm of rain are possible in some areas.
“While there is still some uncertainty in the forecast, there is no doubt a major storm is approaching,” said NBEMO director Greg MacCallum. “People should be taking steps now to prepare. New Brunswickers need to stay informed about the latest forecasts and adjust their actions accordingly.”
The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization offers the following advice:
- People need to be able to meet their needs for at least three days. A 72-hour preparedness kit is essential.
- People living or working in coastal areas should remain vigilant about the threat posed by waves and storm surge. This is not the time for recreational boating.
- Localized flooding is a potential threat. Homeowners should make sure their gutters are clear and guiding water away from the home and should make sure catch basins near the home are clear.
- Drivers should avoid roads covered by water. Water may be deeper than it appears and may conceal sinkholes or other damage and debris.
- High winds are likely. Objects that could blow away and become potentially dangerous projectiles, such as lawn furniture, should be secured or taken inside.
- Power outages are possible. Residents who have a generator should make sure they have sufficient fuel and that it is in proper working order. Those who have a generator but have never used it are encouraged to read the instructions on how to operate it safely.
