Blackville Girl Guides Tree Planting Ceremony
On Thursday, August 27, the Blackville Girl Guides, Brownies and Sparks participated in a tree planting ceremony at the Blackville Municipal Park. The maple tree was planted in the center of the park near the recently added millstones.
Island View District in Coastal Shore Girl Guide Area received a Toronto Dominion Friend of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) Tree Planting Grant. Over 100 Guiding units throughout Canada received grants this year to help them take an active role in transforming green spaces in their communities. It is also a way for girls and young women a hands-on way to raise their awareness of environmental issues. With their grant, seven different species of trees and four shrubs were planted at the Nelson Boy Scout Hall while each unit in Island View District was given a maple tree to plant in their community. The Blackville Girl Guides chose the beautiful park in Blackville in which to plant their tree.
Along with the tree planting ceremony, there were also jumping castles, face painting, and other activities. The public event was well attended by the individual groups, their families, leaders, Blackville mayor Andrew Hawkes and village councillors Cindy Ross and Matt Sturgeon.
