Back-to-School Paper Bag Lunch BBQ at Blackville Foodland set for August 28

Join Blackville Foodland for a special Back-to-School Paper Bag Lunch BBQ event on Thursday, August 28, at 85 Main Street, Blackville! The event kicks off with free face painting from 10:00am until 12:00pm.
From 10:30am until 1pm, enjoy a delicious lunch for just $5, which includes your choice of a hotdog or hamburger, a cookie, a drink, and a bag of chips, served in a brown paper lunch bag!
Bring the kids along for some extra fun with free helium balloons and a jumping castle.
There will also be a 50/50 # square draw.
This event is in support of Tom’s Lunch, an initiative at Blackville School that launched last September. Thanks to the Thomas Dunn Memorial Fund, $2000 will be donated each year to ensure students in need receive hot lunches, with teachers discreetly coordinating with cafeteria staff to provide meals, no questions asked. Proceeds from the BBQ will also go towards this initiative.
Come out and enjoy some great food and support a wonderful cause as we kick off the new school year!
What is Tom’s Lunch?
Tom was a blue-eyed, sandy blonde-haired, full-of-life 14-year-old when he was lost in an accident in June of 2018. Since then, the Thomas Dunn Memorial has worked to ensure he is remembered for his kindness while giving back to the community.
At the time of his passing, Tom had just graduated from middle school. He had been awarded MVP for soccer and even received a certificate for “The Best Bagged Lunch,” a lighthearted recognition that reflected how he was always seen with his brown paper lunch bag—ready to share it with anyone who needed it.
Fast forward to 2024: after many successful years of fundraising through Tom’s Memorial Ball Tournament, the Memorial Committee heard about a lunch program at another school and saw an opportunity to give back in a new way.
And so, Tom’s Lunch was born.
The program, created by the Thomas Dunn Memorial in partnership with Blackville Foodland, ensures that no student at Blackville School goes without a meal. When a student does not have lunch, the program covers the cost. Each school year, Tom’s Lunch provides $2,000 to the school, and in its first year alone, it gave 151 students the comfort of a hot meal.
Tom was known for helping others, and with the continued support of the community, that spirit lives on. The Annual Tom’s Lunch BBQ at Blackville Foodland on August 28 offers community members the chance to purchase their own brown bagged lunch for $5, with all proceeds helping to feed students for years to come.
The Thomas Dunn Memorial thanks the community for its unwavering support.
