Heat Warning in Effect for Miramichi River Valley

A hot and humid airmass is settling over our region and will persist for the next few days. Conditions are expected to improve by Friday.

For Wednesday, humidex values of 40 to 41 are expected across parts of Miramichi River Valley.

Tuesday, July 15:
High of 31°C, with a humidex near 38.

Wednesday, July 16:
High of 33°C. Humidex expected to reach 41.

Thursday, July 17:
High of 30°C, with a humidex near 38.


Protect Yourself and Others from Heat Illness

Extreme heat can affect everyone’s health, but certain groups are at greater risk:

  • Older adults
  • Infants and young children
  • People living alone
  • Those with chronic illnesses

Check in on at-risk individuals multiple times a day — in person or by phone.


Know the Signs of Heat Illness

Early signs of heat exhaustion include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Dark urine
  • Intense fatigue
  • Extreme thirst

Stop activity immediately, seek shade, and drink water.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency.
Signs include:

  • Red, hot skin
  • Confusion
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of consciousness

Call 9-1-1 immediately and try to cool the person by:

  • Moving them to a cooler place
  • Removing excess clothing
  • Applying cold water or ice packs

Stay Cool & Safe

  • Drink water before you feel thirsty
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing
  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat – plan for early morning or late evening
  • Use fans or air conditioning if available
  • Close blinds and open windows only when it’s cooler outside
  • Head to public cooling areas like libraries, community centres, or shaded parks
  • Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles

This warning is in effect to help prevent heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
