On Saturday, May 24th, during the annual New Brunswick Association of Fire Chiefs (NBAFC) Convention, Chief Dwain Hallihan was presented with the NBAFC President’s Award for Excellence in Leadership—one of the highest honours recognizing outstanding leadership in the fire service. The award celebrates Chief Hallihan’s 45 years of remarkable dedication, tireless commitment, and the lasting impact he has made on the Renous-Quarryville Fire Department (RQFD), his community, and surrounding departments.

In addition to his role as Chief, Dwain has served as a New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) Fire Services Instructor for over 10 years, sharing his expertise and passion with the next generation of firefighters. He has also been an Area Training Coordinator for the Miramichi Valley Fire Fighters Association for more than a decade, further demonstrating his commitment to advancing fire safety and training across the region.

In attendance were Chief Hallihan’s wife Kathy, Miramichi River Valley Mayor Kevin E. Russell, RQFD Captain Dan MacVicar and his wife Sheri, Sunny Corner Fire Department Chief Robert Hare and his wife, Miramichi River Valley Councillor Paula Hare.

Also present were Sonya Matchett, Cathy Sherrard, and Brennan Sherrard, who laid a fire helmet in honour of Brennan’s late grandfather, former Sunny Corner Fire Chief Murray Sherrard.

Chief Hallihan, humbled by the recognition, has long been admired for his strong leadership and his habit of going above and beyond for the RQFD, neighbouring departments, and the greater community. Under his guidance, the department has consistently upheld a high standard of excellence and reliability.
